  3. borders in upper (2, 3) and lower 
  4. (5, 6) layers are blurred, 
  5. compared to the sharp 
  6. boundaries in layer 4. The 
  7. arrows illustrate electrode 
  8. tracks made in layer 4 (upper 
  9. left) and layer 2 or 3 (upper 
  10. right). The lower diagrams plot 
  11. ocular dominance of cells 
  12. recorded along the tracks. In 
  13. layer 4, we find abrupt 
  14. alternation between group 1 
  15. (contralateral eye only) and 
  16. group 7 (ipsilateral eye only). In 
  17. other layers, we find binocular 
  18. cells, and the eye dominance 
  19. alternates by going through the 
  20. intermediate degrees of eye 
  21. preference. (1, 4, and 7 refer to 
  22. ocular dominance.)

  25. subdivisions in layer 4 appeared 
  26. as patches. But we wanted to 
  27. know how the pattern would 
  28. appear if we stood above the 
  29. cortex and looked down.
